The Carboneria or Casa Tarragó was an ’Occupied Self Managed Social Center’ from 2008 to 2014 that was deeply immersed in the local community and hosted several type of activities related to art and music. After the eviction of squatters, the iconic building was to be demolished and rioting broke out in the Sant Antoni neighbourhood. In July 2016 Barcelona City Council, taking into consideration that this was the first building built in the Eixample of Ildefons Cerdà, decided to preserve its facade.
